In response to the global spread of SARS COV-2 and increasing numbers of individuals testing positive for COVID-19 in Canada, the SING Canada Faculty and local planning committee have decided to cancel SING Canada 2020. In summer 2021, we will host SING Canada here at the University of Alberta with the same theme of microbial genomics, H. pylori, and Indigenous community-driven research.
From infectious disease to diabetes, and heart and lung diseases (among other conditions), Indigenous peoples have experienced ongoing crises in community health that have arrived in conjunction with the political and territorial dispossessions characteristic of colonialism. For Indigenous communities, the current realities brought on by COVID-19 are, unfortunately, not wholly unprecedented. We stand in support of Indigenous communities globally as we collectively endure another threat to the wellbeing of our peoplehoods. On that front, the SING Canada Faculty is currently developing what will be an online, open access course entitled, Indigenous Peoples and Pandemics.
