For The Wild - Dr. KIM TALLBEAR on Reviving Kinship and Sexual Abundance /157

Intimacy and sexuality is the soil that gives rise to creativity, pleasure and the regeneration of new life. As mainstream understandings of sex, marriage, and family continue to shift, Dr. Kim TallBear highlights how the colonial project of nation-building disrupted the vitality of Indigenous kinship by imposing heteronormative monogamous marriage and the nuclear family structure. How have these constraints bred hyper-sexualized, paradoxical and fetishized beliefs that degrade relationships, the wellbeing of communities and the land? How do the forces of settler state biopolitics and multiculturalism continue to shape population in the colonial mold?  By unraveling the doctrines of scarcity and separation, we are challenged to shatter pervasive beliefs of boundaries, binaries, and taboos within our relations.

For The Wild is a female-led millennial-run, progressive media organization and nonprofit. Our work interweaves tangible land-based restoration, wilderness conservation, storytelling, and education.

We join some of the brightest thought-leaders and visionaries of our time– to uplift a multitude of perspectives, to amplify grassroot voices, and to tell stories that would otherwise disappear in mainstream media. Key topics include the struggle to protect wild nature, to promote ecological renewal and resistance and to heal from the disconnection furthered by consumer culture and human supremacy.

Not only does this work aim to produce an anthology of the Anthropocene, but it also strives to support a new paradigm of earth renewal through conservation and restoration ecology. In these challenging times when access to information about climate change and social resistance are under threat, when the criminalization of dissent is increasing and when scientists are being silenced, the free, independent media are last watchdogs for sharing the truth. This is what we aim to do with the podcast.
